FIRST RESPONSE: Good gifts don’t validate bad doctrine.

Some would write off these folks “sensing the Spirit” as emotionalism or delusion, and it may have been.

But not necessarily. Evidently the Holy Spirit’s manifestation in the Corinthian church was significant enough for Paul to write at length about the proper exercise of spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12 and 14). Regardless of your position on such gifts today, clearly they were evidence of the Holy Spirit’s ministry in that situation. The relevant point is that gifts were evidenced among people who were seriously wrong.

We’re all aware of past sexual scandals among well-known pastors, televangelists, or Christian artists. Yet in hindsight we note that, even when these ministers practiced ongoing immorality, their ministerial gifts remained intact. The gifts couldn’t justify the sin, nor did the sin nullify the gifts.

All of which reminds us, “The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable” (Rom. 11:29). The manifestation of God’s presence is ultimately a display of grace, not a reward for good works, nor proof of right teaching, nor a seal of approval for behavior.
